White nails are lovely but they’re not always easy to attain. Various things can cause your nails to yellow or darken. You can prevent this by changing a few habits and treat discolored nails in several ways, too. Let’s talk about both of these subjects.
1. Wear Gloves when You’re Cleaning or Gardening
Cleaning and gardening both will wreak havoc on your nails. Not only will these chores chip and break your nails but they’ll discolor them, too. You don’t have to cover your them every time you wash a few dishes but if you’re cleaning with chemicals then it’s a good idea to wear gloves. The old saying is that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and it’s certainly true here. Save yourself the trouble of needing to whiten your nails later by wearing gloves when you clean or garden.
2. Stop Smoking
Smoking will make your fingertips and nails yellow. It doesn’t do much for the skin around your lips, either. Giving up smoking has so many benefits, most importantly to your health. It’s a very difficult habit to break but you can do it. Don’t give up!
3. Take a Break between Manicures
Constant manicures are murder on your nails. This’s even true of manicures you give yourself at home. Give your nails a break in between manicures. I try to give my nails a week off before I paint them again. It’s hard to do when you love the look of freshly painted nails but this tip will help prevent discoloration as well as breaking and peeling.
4. Always Use Base Coat
Always use a base coat whenever you do your nails. Base coats create a barrier between your nails and the polish. They’re usually a clear or light colored product that’s formulated to protect or even strengthen your nails. It’s a small step that makes a big difference. Darker colors of nail polish are especially bad at staining your nails so base coat is especially important when you’re wearing a dark shade. 💅
5. Try a Whitening Polish
There’re nail polishes that’re for the sole purpose of making your nails white. I’ve tried some of them and found them to be very effective. I honestly don’t know how they work but my nails were always whitened wonderfully afterward. A couple to try are Sally Hansen’s Insta-brite Nail Whitener and Eveline Cosmetics Nail Whitener. You’ll love how simple it is to whiten your nails this way.
6. Use a Nail Whitening Pencil
Another option to whiten your nails once they’ve already became discolored is this one. Nail whitening pencils are very effective. While nail whitening pencils aren’t used for your entire nail, they can do wonders for the tips. Your nails will look so lovely that people will be asking if you’ve had them done. If you can’t find them at your local drugstore, Amazon has several varieties you can choose from.
7. Try Some Home Remedies
There’re many different home remedies you can try to remove discoloration from your nails. Some of the things you can use are probably already in your home. You can make a paste out of baking soda and water to scrub the discoloration away. You can also apply lemon juice to them, which is something that’s known to brighten and lighten. Pinterest has a lot of suggestions for whitening your nails naturally if you’d like more ideas.
