1

Prep Your Nails

The first step on how to get dip dyed nails is to prep your nails first. It's always good to prep your nails before you paint them because it helps keep your nails healthy. First, wash your hands. Then, remove any leftover polish, then clip and file your nails as needed. When you’re done preparing your nails, paint them with a clear base coat. It provides a nice even base for the other nail polishes to adhere to.

2

Obtain a Makeup Sponge

Pick up a makeup sponge. Usually they come in packs and are triangular in shape. I recommend picking up the cheapest ones you can find from a local Wal-Mart or a similar store. Soak your sponge in a cup of water before using. It stops the nail polish from being absorbed into the sponge too quickly.

3

Choose Two or Three Colors

Pick out two or three colors of your choosing. Contrasting colors will work best. Or you can use slightly different colors, but of the same hue for a nice smooth gradient effect. Paint your entire nail with one of your chosen colors first and let it dry completely. Note that your first coat should be the lightest color!

4

Add Patches of Color to the Sponge

Paint small patches of nail polish onto the sponge. Make sure to paint a few coats so the nail polish won’t dry up before you get to use it. Make sure not to place them too close together! You don't want the colors to blend together just yet!

5

Pat Each Color onto Your Nails

Now comes the fun part! Start at the bottom of your nails with the first color. Dab it on carefully. Next, dab on the second color, then the third. Make sure the colors overlap slightly, so there is a smooth transition from one color to the next.

Famous Quotes

One who gains strength by overcoming obstacles possesses the only strength which can overcome adversity.

6

Apply a Clear Coat

After dabbing all of your chosen colors on each one of your nails, finish with a clear top coat. The top coat will finalize your look by creating a nice shiny finish.

7

Clean up

Since the sponge isn’t an exact tool, you may end up with lots of nail polish outside the edges of your nails or below the cuticle. Use a Q-Tip soaked in nail polish remover to remove the nail polish that got outside of your nails.

There you go, ladies! You're all done! What do you all think of dip dyed nails? This trend is definitely great for when you can't decide between colors! I really love this gradient look, especially with neon colors like orange, pink and yellow. Have you tried this trend before? If not, will you be trying this look in the future? Do share! I'd love to hear from you!
