I’m very picky about my finger and toenails, so I hate when they aren’t all looking perfect and polished. There’s nothing worse for me than a broken nail because I hate when all my nails don’t look the same. Turns out there are some habits that lots of girls have that may be causing your broken nails. Once you know what they are, you can take steps to keep yours from breaking. Here are some of the most common causes of broken nails.

1

Keeping Your Nails Too Long Causes Them to Break

If you wear your nails too long, it’s much more likely that they will break. You’ll ding them or whack them on something and then one of them will break. Then you have nails that are not all the same length, which never looks that great. If you wear your nails shorter, it’s easier to keep them from breakage. I cut mine pretty short and broken nails are a thing of the past for me.

2

Spending Lots of Time in the Water Inundates Your Nails with Water

Are you a swimmer or do you just like to soak in the hot tub every day? Either way, spending a ton of time in the water ends up in waterlogged nails. This makes them a little less strong, which makes them more prone to breakage. If this is the case for you, make sure you’re taking measures to strengthen your nails so that they can handle the strains of all that water.

3

You Wear Polish All the Time

I’m totally guilty of this. I can’t stand how my nails look without polish on them. I very rarely go without polish, even if it’s just clear. Turns out this is a mistake I shouldn’t be making. Nails need a break from nail polish so they can stay healthy and strong. If you wear a lot of polish, it pays to take a break so that your nails don’t pay the price.

4

You Have Dry Skin on Your Hands

If the skin on your hands is dry, you can assume your nails may need some attention to. Dry, brittle nails are more prone to breakage so it pays to massage a good quality lotion or hand cream into your hands and nails. Do this on a regular basis and your nails will be hydrated and healthy.

5

Rough Team Sports Can Cause Broken Nails

If you play on a soccer, basketball or volleyball team, long nails are a recipe for disaster. They’ll get in the way of your sport and getting hit the wrong way with the ball can snap those nails instantly. I guess in the end, you’ll have to choose whether you want long nails or a place on the team. It’s not likely that you’ll be able to have both.

Cleaning Your House without Gloves is Never a Good Idea

When you clean or wash the dishes, wearing gloves is an easy way to protect your nails. Exposure to harsh chemicals, water and soap can weaken your nails and leave them brittle and soft. This makes it more likely that they’ll break while you do everyday things like dust or carry groceries. Wearing gloves is such an easy step, there’s no reason not to do it.

Certain Health Conditions Can Lead to Broken Nails

Sometimes an underlying health condition could be the reason your nails are breaking all the time. This might be a B vitamin deficiency or kidney issues. If your nails are constantly breaking, but you can’t figure out why, it’s time for you to see your doctor for an evaluation.

What do you do when your nails break? What causes them to break?
