7 Ways to Use Olive Oil for Beauty Purposes ...

There are a surprising number of ways to use olive oil. The substance is a popular addition to salad dressings, and you can also cook with it. However, it's so much more than a food item — this pantry staple is a multi-purpose beauty product. And trust me — you'll be very shocked to learn some of the problems that it can be used to treat. Here's a look at the many ways to use olive oil for beauty purposes.

1

Remove Makeup

This is one of the best ways to use olive oil. It makes a gentle makeup remover that contains no chemicals, and it's loaded with skin-nourishing vitamin E. Just pour a little olive oil on your fingers or on a cotton ball and gently massage it all over your face. You can then use a dry tissue or a wet washcloth to wipe it off. You might also be surprised to learn that you can use olive oil as a cleanser even if you aren't wearing makeup — I've tried this oil cleansing method, and it's left my skin amazingly soft and blemish-free.

2

Clean Your Mouth

This might sound crazy, but you can actually use oil olive as a mouth rinse. The Ayurvedic practice of oil pulling is supposed to have all sorts of health benefits, such as improving oral health and treating a long list of health conditions. All you have to do is swish two teaspoons of olive oil, coconut oil, or sesame oil around in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes every morning. Then you just spit it out, rinse your mouth out with water, and brush your teeth like you normally do. Keeping oil in your mouth that long might seem gross and difficult, but I found it pretty easy to do after a few days of oil pulling. It makes my teeth feel smooth and squeaky-clean, and it's really helped with my dry mouth.

3

Treat a Bloated Belly

Did you know that olive oil works as a mild laxative? If you're feeling constipated, just swallow one tablespoon of oil. It will get your digestive system all lubed up and ready to work. Olive oil also won't give you bad cramps like some laxatives do. And since it's loaded with antioxidants, you're getting an added health benefit.

4

Moisturize Your under-Eye Area

I've actually used a tiny bit of olive oil as a face moisturizer, and it really does work. However, it's not the best thing to use before you go to bed since it will rub off on your pillowcase. So instead of using it on your whole face, just use it to moisturize your under-eye area. It creates a protective barrier that holds moisture in, and all those antioxidants are good for that super-sensitive skin. You can also put a bit on your lips to prevent them from getting dry while you sleep.

5

Prevent a Dry Scalp

You've probably heard of using olive oil as a treatment to make hair look healthy and shiny, but it can also improve the health of your scalp. If you're suffering from a dry scalp, just massage some olive oil into your scalp using your fingertips. Then put on a shower cap or wrap your hair with plastic and let the olive oil sit for 30 minutes or more. Rinse it out with shampoo and condition as usual (if you can, try to use a sulfate-free shampoo). Some people also like to warm the olive oil up before applying it, but the treatment has worked just fine for me without this added step. Try doing this treatment once a week to keep your scalp itch-free.

Treat Callused, Cracked Feet

If you don't have the money or the time for a pedicure, olive oil is the perfect cheap alternative for soft, footsie-read tootsies. Just massage the oil on your feet before you go to sleep and carefully put on a pair of old socks to lock moisture in while protecting your bed sheets from the oil. You'll wake up with a new pair of feet. For even softer skin, try scrubbing your feet with a mixture of olive oil and sea salt before following the steps above. This mixture can also be used as a hand and body scrub.

Improve the Look of Eyelashes and Eyebrows

There are women who swear that olive oil makes eyelashes grow. I'm not sold on this claim, but the oil really can improve the look of your lashes by making them appear shinier and thicker. Just dab a little on your finger or on the end of a cotton swab and carefully coat your lashes with it. Think about it: You condition the hair on your head, so why not condition your lashes? I've also used olive oil to slick down unruly eyebrow hairs. You can apply a tiny bit to your brows and use a toothpick to shape your brows.

So when it comes to beauty, who knew that a humble salad dressing ingredient could be so helpful? And these are just a fraction of the ways that olive oil can be used during your daily life! So what are your favorite ways to use olive oil?
